On August 28, 1821, José Estrada of Monterey wrote a letter to his friend, José de la Guerra, in Santa Barbara. The letter had a brief postscript which is tantalizing in the limited information it gives. The postscript states:
"The Russian surgeon has brought vaccine and today has vaccinated 54 persons, I being the first."
